Who is the ConservAsianist?

Oh, hello there.
My name is Travis and I have a Bachelors of Science in Marine Biology. As an Asian American, I am keenly aware of the lack of minorities and minority representation in fields like conservation and sustainability. Caring for the environment and nature is not something that is only for a certain group of people because the environment affects all of us, whether we believe it does or not.
I want to help change this, and so I have taken on the terribly wonderful moniker of ConservAsianist. I have spent 5 years of my life working with marine mammals in several research facilities, focusing on their care and well being. During this time I learned a lot about the scientific process, what being a scientist was like, and, most importantly, how much I enjoy teaching others about science.
I once read a published scientific paper that said something along the lines of "the fecundity of this species noticed a sharp decline due to the low recruitment rate of pups." If you can already understand what this means, hurray! Unfortunately, for most people reading this, they will probably have to read through this sentence at least twice. I definitely had to, despite being trained to read scientific jargon.
Myself, and many other scientists will agree that right now there is too much of a divide between the academic scientific community and the general public and there really shouldn't be.
Knowledge should not be something that is accessible only for the privileged and scientific knowledge should not be blocked behind paywalls or written in a way that you need a $40,000 degree just to read it!
Let's change that. I will be your "sustainabill-a-buddy" as the ConservAsianist and together let's learn about how we can save the planet.
